Introduction

For this project I wanted to make a character that I felt I would enjoy but also have the confidence to complete for the 2nd stage of the competition. As this was my first character which I would do from start to finish from scratch I wanted to play it safe but still take some risks to learn new software and skills. For my character I wanted to go for a scout/rifleman class which could be used in MOBA’s such as league of legends or MMO’s such as Warcraft but still had influences from other games which I played and enjoyed through early school years.

To increase this influence, one of the games ‘Valkyria Chronicles’ announced its fourth instalment which did influence the character design as I enjoyed its SRPG gameplay and visual style.

I decided to go for a female fox hybrid character which would have a nice mix hard and soft poly modelling involved but also allowed me to have a bit of freedom when designing her. Lynette would play the part of a scout class whom would collect information using reconnaissance and also do small hit and run tactics with her rifle. With her counter-part being a fox she would also allow night vision and more sensitive hearing to detect hostiles.  Ideally she would have lighter equipment to allow her agility to remain at a high rate and will avoid encounters as much as possible.

Final Summation

So as mentioned before this is the first character I will have actually finished which is a nice achievement for me. However I am both optimistic and pessimistic about the final result.

So the good thing is I am relatively happy with the end result, I think I sculpted it quite nicely and the textures are adequate, through the journey I’ve used a various amount of software from zbrush to 3dcoat to marmoset which will be very useful for the future as I think this one achievement has at least sparked a possible interest in a specific career path rather than a lost sheep.  I also now have a sort of time frame on how long I could take on something. Out of the 45 days between the 1st & 2nd deadlines I’m sure I worked a good 20 of those days even if they were short sessions. But as they say the more I do the better and quicker I should become, and also learn more mistakes and how to avoid them.

What I wish I could have done, proper rigging would have been nice as then I could have saved time and possible stress, as it also is a good skill to know as it co-exists with topology which I need to get better at. I need to find a better method to re-topo the high poly. I only used the zbrush method as I am most comfortable in zbrush over 3ds max. But hopefully if this gets me to keep doing more character sculpts sure I will slowly improve over time and repetition. Also wish I spent more time designing the character, after the basic shapes were placed during concept that was all I felt I needed at the time, and I would slowly start losing track where I was going. For future practices I think I will work off premade sketches and images to improve work speed.
